School Program

In 2003, Fernside piloted a program for an in-school grief support group at one local elementary and served 16 children in 2 support groups. Since then, the demand for our program has grown tremendously. In the 2006-2007 school year, we were able to provide 31 peer support groups in schools which benefited 186 students.

By offering groups in schools, we provide the opportunity for children who are unable to attend an evening program to still receive grief support. Groups meet in sessions over the course of six weeks. Fernside staff follow a curriculum designed to cover themes that are key for youth who have experienced a death - Feelings, Changes at Home and School since the death, Memories, the Future, etc.

We respond to inquiries from principals, counselors, teachers and nurses. The contact at the school works with us to establish the best day of the week and the best time of day to meet. Every school community is different and we work with you to determine what would best meet the needs of your students.

We schedule groups in sessions during the Fall, Winter and Spring. We work around holidays and scheduled days off. Please contact the office if you are interested in learning more about this program and how to offer a group to your students.
