Why did you choose Fernside as your volunteer job and what’s kept you here all these years?
“I came to Fernside after working with Mary McCutchen, Fernside’s former Volunteer Coordinator. I believe we all have a responsibility to support and care for one another. Fernside makes this easy due to their spirit of community and caring. This community spirit reminds me of home and truly in line with who I am as a person.”
~ Tyra Warner, Fernside Volunteer since March 2011
Tyra is so deserving of this recognition although she admitted that she doesn’t understand why we’d want to…she’s simply doing her part! That’s a perfect description of Tyra – unassuming, generous and approachable.
Tyra has primarily served as a support group facilitator at our monthly New Family Orientations. She works with our preteens, grades 6-8, and has an amazing ability to connect with them by creating a welcoming environment so they feel comfortable sharing when they’re ready.
Tyra is currently a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center’s Residential Treatment Center in North College Hill. She previously worked at the Hamilton County Board of Developmental Disabilities and the Daniel Drake Center. She’s been in this field for well over 20 years!
Some fun facts about Tyra are that she has a degree in Recreation and Park Administration with an option in Therapeutic Recreation from Eastern Kentucky University. She likes to spend her free time baking and with her family in Maysville, Kentucky, where she’s from.
Thank you, Tyra, for your calm presence, sound judgement and ability to connect with not only the families but fellow volunteers. Your big heart and facilitation skills make all the difference to the children and families you work with each year!
